Why We Designed Our First Harness the Way We Did

Why We Designed Our First Harness the Way We Did

There are a lot of dog harnesses out there.
Bright ones. Technical ones. Ones that promise to fix pulling overnight. Ones that look great in photos on Instagram but feel fiddly the second you’re late for a walk.

When we started thinking about designing our first harness, we didn’t begin with trends or features. We started with a feeling and a problem that needed solving.

It Started With a Simple Problem

Luna never liked anything going over her head. Even when we tried to make it fun with treats and praise.

Every walk began the same way.
Me crouched on the floor.
Harness in hand.
Her watching carefully, unsure.

As soon as I moved closer to put the harness on, she would bolt. I’d end up walking, then running, around the house trying to catch her. When I finally did, I had to hold her securely just to get the harness over her head.

It was challenging, to say the least. Luna wasn’t happy. Neither was I. And it certainly wasn’t a calm way to start a walk. Even taking the harness off felt uncomfortable, because it meant lifting it back over her head again.

That’s when it really clicked.

So much of dog accessories design is built around us. Convenience. Control. How something looks.
Very little of it starts with how the dog actually experiences that moment.

That’s where the idea for our step-in dog harness began.

Why Step-In, Not Over-the-Head

Over-the-head harnesses work well for some dogs.

But for others, especially puppies, sensitive dogs, or those still building confidence, they can feel overwhelming.

A step-in harness changes the experience entirely.

Your dog steps into it calmly.
No lifting over the head.
No sudden movements near the face.
No guessing where their legs go.

It turns getting ready for a walk into something slower. Predictable. Almost quiet.

That mattered to us.

Comfort Isn’t Just About Padding

When people talk about a comfortable dog harness, they often mean softness or thickness. Padding. Cushions.

But comfort is also psychological.

  • Does your dog tense up when you reach for it?
  • Do they freeze, even slightly?
  • Do they pull away before the walk has even begun?

We wanted to design a harness that respected the dog’s nervous system, not just their body. One that supports calm dog walking routines while still feeling safe and secure.

Designed for Real, Everyday Walks

This isn’t a harness designed for training sessions or performance walking.
It’s designed for daily life.

Morning walks when you’re half awake.
Quick trips outside.
Evening strolls where your dog wants to sniff everything slowly.

We focused on:

  • ease of use
  • intuitive fastening
  • balanced weight distribution
  • a secure but gentle fit

Because if something feels complicated or frustrating, it doesn’t get used. And then it doesn’t matter how good it looks.

Thoughtful Design Over Loud Features

We wanted a harness that met our technical standards and genuinely solved the problem we started with. Then came the design.

We wanted something instantly recognisable as a Twine & Co harness. Something that signified considered design and quiet luxury, not something that shouted.

So we asked quieter questions:

  • Does this feel calm to put on?
  • Does it sit naturally on the body?
  • Does it support confidence rather than control?
  • Does it look beautiful?

The result is a dog walking harness that feels considered rather than technical.

Who This Harness Is Really For

This harness is for:

  • puppies learning what walks are
  • dogs who dislike anything going over their head
  • dogs who are sensitive to handling
  • owners who value ease and comfort over gimmicks
  • people who believe walking should feel shared, not managed

It’s not about fixing your dog.
It’s about supporting them.

Where This Fits in the Twine & Co Story

This harness isn’t just our first product.
It’s a reflection of how we think.

Thoughtful design.
Calm routines.
Respect for how dogs actually feel.

We’re building slowly, intentionally, and with real life in mind.
And this harness is just the beginning.

We designed our first harness the way we did because we believe small design choices can change how everyday moments feel. Especially for the dogs who trust us to get it right. We’re sharing more soon, and we’d love for you to be part of what comes next.
